Can Felix Hernandez win another Cy Young Award?

by Seattle on August 28, 2012

Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, who has had two more spectacular outings since throwing a perfect game on Aug. 15, now has the best earned run average in baseball.

Could he be in line for his second A.L. Cy Young Award this season?

There’s a very good chance. “King Felix” won the prestigious award, which goes to the best pitcher in each league, back in 2010 when the Mariners lost 101 games and he ba y eked out a winning record of 13-12. He had the best ERA in the American League at 2.27 and led the league in innings pitched, batters faced and hits allowed per nine innings.

After Monday’s 1-0 victory at Minnesota, in which Hernandez gave up just five hits in a complete-game shutout, he again has the best ERA in Major League Baseball — let alone the American League. He passed Cincinnati’s Johnny Cueto and Detroit’s Justin Verlander to take over the No. 1 spot with a 2.43 ERA.

And imagine what it would be if Hernandez hadn’t slumped in May and June, when his ERA climbed to 3.70 before plummeting back down.

Hernandez has now has nine-straight wins, including five shutouts and four 1-0 victories in his past 13 starts. His record is up to 13-5 and he is leading the A.L. in starts, innings pitched and batters faced. He was the Mariners’ only representative at the All-Star Game, and his perfect game two weeks ago put him in the elite company of just 22 other pitchers in the history of baseball.

He su y is one of the best — if not the best — pitcher in the MLB right now.

If King Felix can keep it up, he has a very real chance of winning his second Cy Young Award. And hey, M’s fans — he doesn’t want to go anywhere.
